Location
Bangladesh lies in the northeastern part of
South Asia between latitudes 20°34' and 26°38' north and
longitudes 88°01' and 92°41' east. Bounded by Indian
Territory on the west, north and east and a small strip
with Myanmar in the southeast and by the Bay of Bengal
on the south, Bangladesh has an area of about 144,000 sq
km.
Its flat fertile plain, comprising mainly the delta of
the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna, is bordered by low hills
in the northeast and southeast with an average elevation
of 244m and 610m respectively. The highest point is
1230m located in the Hill Tracts in the northeast.
Climate
Bangladesh enjoys a subtropical monsoon climate. The
temperature is equable and moderate. The mean minimum
temperature varies from 9.8C to 13.4C in January and
from 25.5C to 26.1C in July. The mean maximum
temperature varies from 24.2C to 25.8C in January and
from 29.9 degrees to 31.8 degrees in July. The annual
rainfall varies from 50 inches to 136 inches.
Although summer and winter are the two main seasons
distinctly prominent, the monotony is broken with the
change of season every two months recorded according
to the Bengali Calendar. These changes are, however,
in degrees and one mixes with the approaching next.
The summer is broken by a welcome monsoon rain, which
makes the land suitable for cultivation. This is again
changed to festive autumn, pleasant winter and
colorful spring.
People
Bangladesh is one of the world’s most
densely populated countries with 150 million
people with an average density of about 1045
people per square kilometer. They are descended
from several racial and sub-racial groups that
entered the subcontinent Asia over the past 5000
years. About 75% of the population live in the
rural areas. 86.6% of the total population are
Muslims, 12.1% Hindus, 06% Buddhists, 03%
Christians and 04% others.
Flora and Fauna
Forest covers about 14% of the land area of
Bangladesh. The three principal forest regions
are the Madhupur jungle, Sundarban, the mangrove
forest along the Southwest coast and the
tropical rain forest of the Chittagong Hills.
The country produces quality timber, bamboo and
cane. Villages are mostly located amidst groves
of bamboo and every house is surrounded by
mango, banana, jackfruit, coconut and other
trees. Rubber plantations are spreading in the
hill areas. Different varieties of wild animals
are found in the forest. Royal Bengal tigers,
crocodiles, deer and other animals are found in
Sundarbans and other animals are found in the
Madhupur jungle. Elephants, rhinoceroses,
monkeys and leopards are found in the hill
areas.
Media
Bangladesh has a vibrant news media both in
Bengali and English. Press enjoys full and
unhindered freedom and operation without any
kind of censorship. Newspapers publish news and
views in a completely free atmosphere, and the
same is true for the electronic media. There are
a large number of daily newspapers published
from Dhaka and other major towns.
